Round Synopsis
A lot of turbulence in the pre-round period, mainly caused by announcements from Velocity (established Spaceminers alliance and community), and BWC (similar thing from Starsphere) stating they would play the following round of Dawn of Myth. After even more turbulent finish of last round (Round 16), Dawn of Myth's own alliances went through a lot of reorganizations and changes. All in all, it was one of the more interesting "break" periods between rounds, and Round 17 was started off with a lot of variables still unknown to most people.
What was known is that Inferno will be re-forming, and taking in most of the players from LDK last round, thus making themselves a candidate for victory. Other likely candidate which community put faith in was Velocity. Even if unproven, their command personel, activity level and the fact that they numbered 90 players (as it turned out, the most out of all alliances), they were held in high regards at the start. Other (at that time) publically known alliances involved were Illusions (re-merge of Valhalla and SQ-Army (TerrA)), SaC and GoD, which were objectively ranked as second tier in the upcoming round, although ones that could very well decide the winner.
Soon into the round, another variable was unveiled - Sky, tag made out of former Perineum communities, including Skyscrapers. It was not until a day after protection that the round started to take it's true shape. After the initial tick 72-80 raids, alliances started talking between each other. Naturally, the goal of smaller alliances was to make Inferno and Velocity (as the only possible opposition) fight between each other. It turned out that the "even sides" story didn't work as planned - this time it backfired. Inferno and Velocity, remembering the course of last round, decided to put a stop to scheming behind the scenes, and decided to form a permanent alliance, and announce it publically. As expected, this wasn't the most popular move with the rest of the community, and public announcement will prove to have even more devastating effect than the actual pact between the two largest forces. At this point, many Inferno representatives openly stated that the pact was made for "personal reasons" (Political scheming from Round 16, rather than to gain easy win. As expected, these statements weren't convincing enough for the opposing alliances. They saw the block as a way to avoid fighting each other and have a fast victory at the expense of small alliances.
The same night, hammering began. Facing heavy incoming from both Inferno (which had all of their seven communities in top 10 at the time) and Velocity at start, no one really expected Illusions and Sky (not even allied to each other), which were their primary targets, to last too long. Needless to say, they didn't. Within the first 2 days of the war, they were annihilated by larger and more active force, and even while being completely unable to retaliate, the waves on them continued.
It was around tick 160-170 when it became obvious that Velocity was, in fact, breaking up - due to inactive command, (Obli having real life problems, other HC not being active enough) and lack of commitment since the first tick. Soon enough, Velocity's disbanding became publically known, and Inferno was left on their own to fight out the round. This was clearly the breaking point of the round, with many events happening in a short period of time. Firstly, SaC refused to assist in the war against Inferno at first. Then, as a shock for many and a surprise for most, a completely unknown alliance made its appearance - =Rebel=. They tagged up and it showed that they had two communities in top 10, and a few more in top 15 - and after Inferno, it was obvious they were the #2 alliance in the round. Moreover, two FA communities, which were playing under Velocity tag chose =Rebel= as their new home for the rest of the round, and made =Rebel= a very important alliance for the round.
The things at the time looked badly for the leading Inferno with their 70 players left to stand on their own, with the rest of the community not really on good terms with them due to blocking from the start of the round. In the end, Velocity turned out to be a good decoy, as what firepower Illusions and SaC could gather during the first days went to hit them. But now Velocity has been completely removed as a variable in the round. Inferno's decision not to give their main hostile alliances (Sky and Illusions) a chance to regrow by fighting new threats, proved to be very feasible. While SaC and =Rebel= were hesitating, Inferno took the time to bash Illusions and Sky communities to the point where they turned completely inactive, and further. Moreover, Inferno now had all seven communities in top 8, with a =Rebel= community (7:7 - TPOA) standing in the way of claiming all top seven ranks.
Fortunately for Inferno, neither SaC, nor (especially) =Rebel= wanted to take a shot at them, and Inferno encouraged this by maintaining their activity and commitment high. In the end it was =Rebel= that started off a war against SaC, in which they gained a slight advantage over them as second ranking alliance - in the meantime Inferno was roiding what was left of Sky and Illusions, while GoD was slowly but surely sneaking their communities (with Cyclone at helm) to top 10.
It wasn't long before other alliances realized it's "now or never" for a try to take down Inferno. SaC made the first serious attempt - or tried to. Inferno, getting the intelligence report about their attack two hours before it was launched, covered and launched at two largest SaC communities. Dexestore, head of Inferno talked to Maeglin some half an hour after Inferno attack was launched, and pointed out that SaC would be heavily hit if they attempt to organize an attack on Inferno in the near future. Intelligence reports won another battle for Inferno as well - when =Rebel= organized the same thing, and were convinced to cancel attack once the information was leaked to Inferno. With two of possibly the most dangerous attacks for Inferno prevented before being launched, SaC and =Rebel= returned to targetting each other, and Inferno returned to roiding Sky and Illusions.
What followed were the talks between =Rebel= and SaC. =Rebel= offered a 14-day ceasefire, which was too long for SaC, who insisted on 7 days. The information was once again reported to Inferno. In any event, the negotiations failed, and =Rebel='s official declaration of war against SaC followed. They launched at SaC the same night, but little did they know about Inferno's targets for the night - which were none other than their top communities in cluster 7. Over the next two days, =Rebel= was starting to loose ground. After the first night, Inferno insisted that SaC stops attacking =Rebel= and deals with growing Sky and Illusions instead. SaC refused. The second night =Rebel= managed to launch a decently covered attack on Inferno's leading community - 7:2 (LDK's 12:5). It was covered and retailated the same night. SaC attacked =Rebel= as well, and many players from Sky and Illusions joined the ganging.
Seeing that this wasn't going to stop, and SaC still refused to attack anyone else but =Rebel=, Inferno decided to grant one-sided ceasefire to =Rebel= in return. As announced on forums, Inferno will no longer exclusively target =Rebel= until =Rebel= decides to fight Inferno first. This was a green light for =Rebel= versus SaC war to continue, especially as personal aversion towards SaC was growing within =Rebel= ranks. Inferno, on the other side, once again satisfied their own personal 'aversions' by paying the leading Sky and Illusions communities a visit once again. Over the next few nights, Inferno allowed their players to attack solo, and SaC recieved most of those hits, although =Rebel= communities in short ETA weren't completely spared either. SaC was once again losing ground, and with Inferno's sympathies being clearly on =Rebel= side, SaC was more often than not the main target of Inferno players. Not long after, Inferno was a clear winning alliance, and =Rebel= a clear second. For a short while, BlueTiger's community (ex-Velocity, which still maintained their high ranking throughout the round) joined Inferno, but after 3 days under tag they decided to quit for the round.
From this point on, round was pretty much over, at least as long as the winners were concerned. Inferno impressively held all 70 of their players in top 100, and all 7 communities in top 7. Soon enough, Inferno and most other players began to slack in activity, and overall game activity decreased. This mostly kept until the end of round. However, some alliances had their own plans for the end of round, such as GoD which were now clearly aiming for the two top 10 communities, and SaC which intensified their attacks on =Rebel= once =Rebel= went inactive. In the last 3 days of the round, SaC completely reduced the lead =Rebel= had, and 3 days before round end even gained a small (10k overall) lead over them. Some Inferno players, however, decided to not allow SaC to end as second ranked alliance. zerocool (#1 at the time) and Talin started out by defending against a SaC attack on 7:5 (Messiah's community - =Rebel=). SideWinder joined the next night, and =Rebel= organized the attack on 8:4 (SaC's flagship Strength through Honour community) to counter SaC's plan to take down top =Rebel= community together with GoD. Attack ruined their plans, and even GoD had to help out in defending 8:4. Although attack on 8:4 was mostly defended off, second waves and a separate attack launched on another SaC community were enough to push SaC back on 3rd rank, and return the silver medal to =Rebel=. This didn't last long, as in the very end, SaC managed to re-take the 2nd rank afterall.
Compared to Round 16, this round was quite short and not overly exciting, at least as far as rankings were concerned. The disbanding of Velocity with BWC not making an appearance completely altered the way things would look before the ticks started. It ended as a short and brutal round, yet surprisingly fair politics-wise, as for 95% of the round, all of the alliances were playing completely solo. Difference in commitment and quality in such an environment was crucial, and it was obvious from the start that Inferno had the most of it. Another bright spot of the round was clearly =Rebel=, showing unity and even some impressive attacking mid-round. Out of smaller alliances, GoD played it very safely and ended with high ranking communities, quite a success for them after having to rebuild most of their playerbase after the last few rounds. As for the rest, Round 17 will be the one they will want to forget quickly.
